“Sketches in Sorrento” refers to an important period of Aivazovsky’s life when he spent several years in Italy (around 1840–1844s).
The landscapes of Italy, and particularly the enchanting shores of the Mediterranean Sea deeply affected his artistic vision and were reflected in his later works.
